Our History
In 1902, Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister, founded the first Goodwill in Boston. This was the start of
Goodwill Industries International which now includes over 180 Goodwill organizations worldwide.
Goodwill BridgePointe Services, Inc. has been evolving for almost 80 years and that evolution is
the result of hard work and dedication on the part of dozens of individuals and organizations.

It was 1930 when Helen K. Barth and Rev. William Bartle saw a need in our
community and formed
Southern Indiana’s first Goodwill store. The store was
located in downtown New Albany in the
former YMCA building.
Years later in 1961, the Jeffersonville Rotary Club met the community's challenge to
raise $10,000
to create the Southeastern Indiana Rehabilitation Center. This center
first served children and
adults with disabilities through services including speech
therapy, hearing testing, medical
clinics, physical therapy, psychological testing
and preschool classes.
Then in 1984, Goodwill and the Rehabilitation Center merged and became BridgePointe Services & Goodwill
Industries of Southern Indiana, Inc. The agency grew its operations to include
additional services and increased
its Goodwill presence to 11 stores in Southern Indiana.
In 2008, the agency decided to "Embrace Our Goodwill Roots" and changed our name to Goodwill
BridgePointe
Services, Inc. This change reflects the growth of the organization and the support
that our 11 Goodwill stores
provide the organization. Throughout our existence, we have strived
to fill the needs in our community and
provide vital services to children and adults with disabilities
and disadvantages. These services now include
Employment Resources, the Children's Learning Center (formerly the Children's Academy), Goodwill BridgePointe
Stores, Family Support Services, Recycling Efforts and a Voucher Program. Collaborations include SIRH at
Goodwill BridgePointe Services and the Southern Indiana Autism Resource Center in partnership with Rauch, Inc.
